Secure Shell
or SSH is a set of standards and an associated network protocol that allows establishing a secure channel between a local and a remote computer.

SSH File Transfer Protocol or SFTP is a network protocol that provides file transfer and manipulation functionality over any reliable data stream. It is typically used with the SSH-2 protocol to provide secure file transfer.

Web Hosting (community.wvu.edu)

community.wvu.edu is a public web hosting service for the students/faculty/staff of WVU. It requires that you have a CentralID.

Getting Started

  1. Sign up for the CentralID Account
  2. Download Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol (SFTP or SSH) Software from the Systems Software Repository (opens a new window).
  3. Set up your SFTP program or Webpage Editor (one that supports SFTP) to connect to community.wvu.edu.

    Remote Server configuration:
    Host Name: community.wvu.edu
    User ID: Your CentralID
    Password:
    Your CentralID Password

  4. Transfer Files from your computer to your Web Space using an SFTP connection. (See documentation for instructions for your opertating system.)
