Computer Repair Charges

For over ten years the charges associated with repairing your office personal computer at West Virginia University have not changed for your department. This is most remarkable when you consider the inflation rate, cost of parts and labor, and the overall change in technology repair techniques. Labor costs have certainly increased along with the ancillary support such as vehicle costs. While the purchase price of the computer has declined, the cost of replacement parts such as circuit boards with multiple functions that are integrated on the board have not necessarily decreased. Our contract maintenance provider costs per individual repair have increased. Over the years, additional technicians have been added to the repair staff to cover the increase in activity.

After a careful review, an increase in the incident charge to the department was indicated and no longer avoidable. Reviews in previous years have indicated this for some time. While the increase is not fully proportionate to the increased costs, a two-step approach will be implemented. Effective October 1, 2001, the charge increased to $37.50. As of July 1, 2002, this charge is now $50.00 for each incident.

This charge covers all labor and parts for any repair of your personal desktop computer owned by West Virginia University. This does NOT cover any servers or high-end graphics workstations. This charge is very competitive when one considers the labor charged by a commercial repair provider is well beyond this amount and does NOT include any parts. We work very closely with our contract maintenance provider to reduce cost increases and ensure that your personal computer is repaired in a reasonable timeframe. Our goal is to provide a cost effective repair vehicle within a reasonable timeframe. We will continue to review ways to hold the costs down and provide a high level of customer satisfaction so that future increases will continue to be well below the rates of inflation that we experience for other services.
