Computer Lab Guidelines

Academic Information Services Lab Philosophy
- To provide West Virginia University Students, Faculty and Staff with the latest technology and software for their development, and to help prepare students for a successful career in their chosen discipline.

Lab Policies
- You must have in your possession a valid WVU ID to use the Academic Information Services' lab facilities. No exceptions. You will be asked to swipe your ID when entering the computer lab.

- Lab assistants are here to assist you in using the AIS lab facility. They are recognizable by the white, gold and blue name badge they wear while on duty.

- Keep your computer lab clean! Please dispose of your own trash and pack out any items you brought with you. Return your keyboard, mouse to their normal position and push in your chair when leaving the lab.

- Please display the computer ID tag issued to you upon signing in on the velcro tab on top of your computer monitor. Please assure you are using the computer assigned to you.

- No food or drink is permitted in the lab at any time.

- Absolutely no alcohol, tobacco or other drugs are permitted in the labs. Anyone suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be asked to leave and possibly lose their lab privileges.

- Do not loiter or socialize in the computer lab. Our labs are to maintain a "library-like" atmosphere.

- Please do not leave your personal belongings unattended. AIS staff are not responsible for lost, stolen or moved items. It is your responsibility to keep your own property safe and secure.

- Items left behind in the lab are stored for a short period of time at the security desk in a lost and found area. Please ask a lab assistant for help in locating lost items.

- The viewing of pornographic or other sexually explicit materials in the lab is not permitted.

- The user is responsible for observing all copyright and licensing laws.

Holidays and Break Schedules
- During holidays and breaks, normal schedules change. Please check the Computer Lab Calendar page for holiday and break schedules

Computer Policies
- Patrons may not install software on any lab computer.

- Patrons are not permitted to modify, delete files, or in any way tamper with the operation of the AIS computer lab systems.

- No personal computer laptop may be connected to the lab network under any circumstance. Peripherals such as digital cameras, jump drives, and other USB devices may be connected to your lab computer with the permission of the on-duty lab staff.

- Headphones may be connected to any AIS lab computer, but we do ask that the volume be kept at an appropriate level.

Printing in the Lab
- All lab printers are controlled by the campus-wide Paid Printing System. If you are unfamiliar with its operation, please ask a lab leader for assistance.

- Users are not permitted to interfere with the operation of any lab printer. This includes removing pages while the printer is processing and expelling finished documents. This is to insure that the pages for any user's print job are not shuffled and misplaced. Additionally, all printer control consoles are off limits. If an error occurs please contact a lab assistant.

- If you wish to use the Big Prints! large format inkjet plotter, we have an instructional web page on its operation available on the left menu bar.

- Special paper (letterhead, colored, etc.) cannot be used in the AIS lab laser printers.

Cellular Phones and Pagers
- Cellular phones may not be used inside the lab, no matter how short the conversation. Please take all cell phone calls outside the lab. All cell phones and pagers should be placed in quiet or vibrate mode while you are using the AIS computer lab.

Saving and Backing Up Data Files
- Users should never use the lab PC hard drives for storage. The hard disks are regularly purged of user files and AIS cannot be held responsible for your lost data.

- Students are encouraged to save their files frequently to help prevent loss of work. It should also be a common practice to keep copies of your work on multiple floppies, CD's, DVD's or USB Drives.

- Diskettes, CD's, DVD's or USB Drives that are left behind and turned in may be found in the lab Lost and Found. Please ask a lab attendant for help in locating items you may have left behind.

- Floppy drives are only available at our White Hall Computing Center and Evansdale Residential Complex (Towers) labs.

Help with Class Assignments
- Computer lab staff members will provide assistance in the operation of the various software packages installed on the AIS lab computers. However, staff members will not solve homework problems for students, nor can they spend so much time assisting individual users that they neglect the lab desk.
