  • Fake IRS Phishing E-Mail Hitting Campus Inboxes

An e-mail claiming to be from the IRS is being reported by many WVU users. The e-mail says that the user is due a refund and to click a link to register their claim. The link goes to various servers in Russia and Denmark and asks for personal information including Social Security Numbers. Do NOT fall for this scam! Forward any such e-mail as an attachment to defendyourdata@mail.wvu.edu and then delete it. Remember: The IRS NEVER contacts taxpayers by e-mail. Defend Your Data! Don't give identity thieves your personal information. See the following article from Forbes about this scam with an example e-mail. Don't Fall For Refund Related Email Phishing Scams

92% of Malware Attacks Used ZIP files

The most commonly used delivery method for malware is a ZIP archive file, and the most utilized term in malware file names in the second half of 2012 was “UPS.” So says security firm FireEye in their Advanced Threat Report for the second half of 2012 based on data collected from over 89 million events. Use extreme caution when opening a ZIP file in or attached to an e-mail. If the sender is not personally known to you, do NOT open the file. If you know the sender, verify that they sent the ZIP before opening it. FireEye Advanced Threat Report

  • Report Phishing and Spam to Defend Your Data

In an effort to build metrics about information security threats on campus, Information Security Services requests that WVU users forward phishing and/or spam e-mails you receive to us. Do NOT reply to these e-mails. Please Forward the message as an attachment to: defendyourdata@mail.wvu.edu After that, delete it from your inbox.

  • Widespread Virus Proves Macs Are No Longer Safe From Hackers

Only Windows PC's are subject to malware and viruses. Macs don't get viruses, right? WRONG! There is nothing about Apple's operating system that makes it immune to malware. During the first week of April, over 600,000 Macs were infected with a new Trojan called "Flashback." WVU provides free anti-virus protection to all WVU users, including Macs. Download free Symantec EndPoint from the following link.
