Student Employment at OIT
The
Office of Information Technology offers student positions
as a career development program open to students interested
in pursing technical jobs and professions
in information technology. The program develops
highly skilled, institutionally knowledgeable, productive,
and motivated
student employees to support the Information
Technology staff in managing their workload and reaching
their unit goals
and objectives. Participating students gain
valuable work experience and training as well as earned
income.
The WVU Office of
Information Technology (WVU-OIT), provides educational
and administrative computing information to the West
Virginia University community. The vision for Information
Technology at West Virginia University is to empower
the university community through information technology,
to enrich the academic experience for students, and to
strengthen the ability of faculty and staff to teach,
conduct research, and provide public service throughout
West Virginia and beyond. OIT units include the Office
of Information Technology, CIO Office (includes the IT
Business Office IT HR Office and Communications),
Information
Systems, Support
Services, Technology Support Services, Telecommunication and Network Operations. Services provided range from programming
analysis and design, microcomputer
repairs, local area network development and operation,
consulting, to training and help desk.
Types of Student Employment
The Office of Information Technology employs 6 types of student positions, as described below:
- Professional Technologist Intern (Int Prof Tech) - This position is the student entry level into the Prof Tech Job Family and is in training to be hired for a professional level position, upon graduation, subject to availability of a vacant position. This intern will possess the knowledge and ability to design and develop computer applications, has working knowledge of general office software including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications, proven experience in web-based code development, proven experience in development using databases, web servers, application tiers and/or experience with distance education software. The student will also have successfully completed at least two years college education (over 60 hours completed) in a related technical field, and/or an equivalent combination of education, working experience and certifications.
- Advanced Technical Student Worker (Adv Tech Student). This student has exceptional technical skills obtained from previous work experience and education (typically obtained from majoring in Computer Science, Engineering or MIS programs). These students typically work in Administrative Systems performing para-professional and/or highly technical database/development/ programming duties. The student will also have successfully completed at least two years college education (over 60 hours completed) in a related technical field, and/or an equivalent combination of education, working experience and certifications.
- Technical Student Worker (Tech Student) - This student has above average computer literacy skills and is able to provide consulting assistance to others. These students typically work at the Help Desk as first line Help Desk Consultants.
- Clerical Student Worker (Clerical Student) - This student has average computer literacy skills and is able to provide general administrative assistance to others. These students typically work as academic lab leaders, telephone operators and/or business office assistants.
- Graduate Student Worker (GA) is established through the Graduate Office. OIT must comply with all Grad Office requirements in employing grad students.
- Work Study Student Worker - (are not paid through OIT) and are referred by the Financial Aid Office. OIT must comply with all Financial Aid Office requirements in employing work study students.
OIT Student Application Process
- Complete the Student Employment Job Application (.doc) form.
- Prepare a one page resume.
- Print, read and sign the Student Employment Agreement (.doc).
- Attach the above three documents to an email message and send to ITStudentJobs@mail.wvu.edu
- In the subject line of the email indicate
the type of position you wish to apply for
- If OIT units are hiring and a supervisor
is interested in your qualifications, you will be contacted
via email to schedule an interview.
