EXSMTP Server Upgrade, User Configuration Changes Required By 12/30/2009

In an effort to further consolidate services under WVU MasterID accounts, OIT has created a new secure outgoing mail server for use by third-party e-mail clients. The old server, exsmtp.systems.wvu.edu, which used CentralID accounts, will be taken out of service on December 30, 2009.

OIT suggests users of the old server update their configurations as soon as possible. Information on the new server, exsmtp.wvu.edu, can be found at the following URL: http://oit.wvu.edu/groupwise/smtp/

Users of installed Novell GroupWise clients, WebAccess, the MIX web portal, and the on-campus server smtp.wvu.edu will not be affected by this change.

GroupWise Version 8 Clients Available

The Office of Information Technology has made the new GroupWise version 8 clients available for download on the main GroupWise page. There are versions for supported Windows, Macintosh, and Linux systems.

The version 8 clients each offer nice new feature enhancements in a familiar interface. The Macintosh client has been significantly improved and now offers features previously only available in the Windows client. Lists of new features are included on individual client installation pages.

GroupWise 8 Server Upgrade

The WVU Office of Information Technology will upgrade the GroupWise system during an extended regular Wednesday maintenance window occurring from 7 p.m. on September 16 until 2 a.m. on September 17. During this time the system will be unavailable.

When service is restored, our servers will be running GroupWise 8 and GroupWise WebAccess will be the new version. Those running previously installed GroupWise client software can continue to use it without interruption or change at that time.

We anticipate making the GroupWise 8 clients for Windows, Macintosh, and LINUX available for download a few weeks later. A description of some new features Novell has incorporated into version 8, and a comparison matrix of versions and features can be viewed on the following pages:

GroupWise Mailbox Quotas

As of Aug 1, 2009, all new GroupWise accounts will have a 500 MB quota as defined in the Electronic Mail Policy. The policy can be found at http://oit.wvu.edu/policy/oit/oit-11/. When an account reaches 80% capacity, a warning message will be displayed each time a message is sent. When an account reaches or exceeds the quota, mail will be received by the account, but no mail can to be sent until the size of the mailbox is reduced below 100%.
